Understanding Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a condition that affects the brain's ability to process auditory information. People with APD hear sounds correctly, but their brains interpret these sounds in an atypical way. This can lead to difficulties in understanding and responding to auditory stimuli, causing challenges in communication, learning, and everyday activities.

Symptoms of APD:
- Difficulty understanding speech, especially in noisy environments
- Frequent requests for repetition or clarification
- Problems with following spoken instructions
- Poor listening skills and attention
- Difficulty distinguishing between similar-sounding words or sounds
- Trouble with reading, spelling, and comprehension

Causes of APD:
The exact causes of APD are still being studied, but it can be the result of:
- Genetic factors
- Head injuries
- Chronic ear infections
- Neurological disorders

We assess both adults and children for APD. As there are various types of APD we tend to perform our assessments across two appointments to help with listening fatigue.

APD Assesment 1 - £350
1. Hearing Tests: To rule out hearing loss.

2. Tympanometry: To rule out middle ear issues
3. Speech Testing : To identify speech understanding in quiet and noise.

4. LISN-S an internationally accepted screening tool for APD

If the outcome of APD 1 indicates, there may be processing issues, further tests that help identify what processing issue a person has, and then appropriate treatment can be recommended.

APD  Assessment - £200

Living with APD:
Living with APD requires patience and understanding from family, educators, and employers. Strategies like giving clear instructions, using visual aids, and allowing extra time for processing can make a significant difference. Treatments can include auditory training and remote microphones.

Understanding APD is the first step toward creating a supportive environment that enables individuals to thrive. With the right strategies and accommodations, people with APD can overcome many of the challenges they face and lead successful, fulfilling lives.
