Tinnitus Care at Hypatia Hearing

We understand that experiencing tinnitus can be concerning, and we're here to help. Here's what you can expect during your appointment:

1. Detailed Health History:
- We'll start by discussing your medical history, including hearing issues, noise exposure, medications, and overall health.
- Be ready to describe the nature of your tinnitus – is it a ringing, buzzing, or something else? When did it begin? Is it constant or intermittent?

2. Hearing Evaluation:
- A comprehensive audiometric test will assess your hearing ability and detect possible hearing loss.
- This might include pure-tone audiometry, speech recognition tests, and tympanometry to examine how well your middle ear is functioning.

3. Tinnitus Assessment:
- You'll be asked specific questions about your tinnitus to understand its impact on your daily life and emotional well-being.
- We might use tools like the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) to gauge the severity of your tinnitus.
- We might try to "find" your tinnitus. We use several methods to see if we can locate the pitch and volume of your tinnitus. This helps us screen whether you are suitable for sound therapy.

4. Physical Examination:
- A thorough examination of your ears, head, and neck will be carried out to identify any underlying issues contributing to tinnitus.
- This may include checking for earwax blockages, infections, or other abnormalities.

5. Discussion of Possible Causes and Diagnosis:
- Based on the gathered information, we'll discuss potential causes of your tinnitus. Sometimes, pinpointing an exact cause may not be possible, but we'll work to understand your situation. In some instances

6. Treatment Options:
- While there's no one-size-fits-all cure for tinnitus, several treatments can help manage the symptoms. These might include:
- Sound therapy to mask or distract from the tinnitus.
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to address any emotional distress related to tinnitus.
- Hearing aids if a hearing loss is present.

7. Follow-Up Plan
- We'll outline a personalised management plan and schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and adjust treatments as needed.
- Your Specialist may recommend educational resources and support groups to help you manage tinnitus more effectively.

8. Questions and Concerns:
- Feel free to ask any questions or express concerns at any point during your appointment. We're here to support you and ensure you leave with a clearer understanding of your tinnitus and the next steps.
